FIFA Investigates Argentina After Alleged Assault on Spanish Players Following World Cup 2026 Final

FIFA has officially launched an investigation into the alleged misconduct of Argentina's players and coaching staff following the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain. The decision comes after match officials submitted reports detailing post-match clashes, alleged assaults, and unsportsmanlike behavior on the pitch.


According to the reports, tensions escalated after the final whistle as Spain's players celebrated their World Cup triumph. Several Argentina players and staff members allegedly confronted the Spanish squad, leading to heated altercations. Videos of the incident have also surfaced on social media.

Roberto Ayala Accused of Punching Dani Olmo

One of the most serious allegations involves Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala, who was reportedly seen in video footage punching Spain midfielder Dani Olmo in the face. Midfielder Leandro Paredes has also been accused of repeatedly throwing punches at Spanish players Eric Garcia and Gavi during the confrontation.

Enzo Fernandez Was Already Sent Off

The controversy intensified after Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card during stoppage time in extra time for a dangerous tackle on Spain's young defender Pau Cubarsí. Fernandez had earlier been booked for arguing with the referee. Following the match, he publicly apologized to Argentina supporters.

No Immediate Red Card for Paredes

Initial reports claimed that Leandro Paredes had also been shown a red card after the final whistle. However, FIFA later clarified that no on-field disciplinary action was taken against him at that time. The governing body confirmed that any potential suspension will now depend on the outcome of its disciplinary investigation.

Messi and Mac Allister Also Under Scrutiny

The report also mentions Alexis Mac Allister, who allegedly made a dangerous challenge on Dani Olmo early in the match but escaped punishment. Lionel Messi has also been drawn into the controversy after reportedly urging the referee to send off Spain defender Marc Cucurella during a heated exchange.

Argentina Allegedly Boycotted Trophy Ceremony

Argentina's players are also accused of turning away during Spain's trophy-lifting ceremony instead of acknowledging the champions. Questions over the team's conduct had already emerged during the semifinal against England, when substitute Valentin Barco reportedly ran from the bench to celebrate provocatively in front of England defender John Stones after Argentina scored.

Despite the controversy, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni defended his squad, saying:

"I am proud of my players and the way they fought throughout the match."

FIFA is expected to review all available video footage, referee reports, and witness statements before announcing whether any players or staff members will face suspensions, fines, or other disciplinary sanctions.
